Seastorm

For this project, I was tasked with creating another new character using a different description that features a new message followed by information describing the character's personality and challenges within the scene.
The new character I created is an Atlantean heroine. The message that best resonates the most when creating the character is : "...you are able to make it through this time in no land, no home, and no apparent rescue by trusting that you will make it".
Using the description as a reference, I was able to create a character that best reflects her as an Atlantean. A unique feature I incorporated into her is her stripes all over her body which was directly inspired by the patterns of a nautilus seashell. Several designs were made of the character, experimenting with different outfits, accessories and markings until eventually settling with the final design we have now.
After finishing the design, I also made a background using the descriptions to create a very chaotic and violent thunderstorm in rough seas, which required me to make another drawing of the character in a different angle and matching it to where it gets placed in the background.
Among the texts that describe the scene include :
“You are surrounded by storms, wild moments, and a great deal of emotional drama at this time...”
“There is destruction behind you, and you have left it in the past, but you are still searching for your new home.”
“Even though the seas are wild, the atmosphere is torn with stabs of lighting, and there is no land in sight...”
“The Sea Storm being is following her intuition and she will know what to do to make it home...”
“...she will keep swimming until she reaches land...”
In the similar process when I designed the character, I made a first draft of the background, albeit in a quite basic design. I eventually redid the entire scenery to make it more realistic by mixing several dark and light colour tones to perfectly capture the image of a very stormy ocean. Slight changes were made to the character by splitting parts of her body, that appear in and out of the water, and using some shadows so that she blends into the scene.
After finishing the updated background, I applied a blending mode to change the tone of the scene, settling with one that made the whole surroundings darker, (top image).
