Splatoon characters

Splatoon is a shooter game created by Nintendo, that I like playing. My first experience with the franchise was when I played Splatoon 2. I would spend hours playing in battles and participate in special events that happen once a month. When the game's popularity started declining, I was playing much less than I used to and have also started losing some interest to the franchise itself.

When Splatoon 3 was officially announced, my interest in Splatoon returned and it continued right until the game's official release in late 2022. I have started playing again now having moved to the new one.

One of the features of the game is the character customisation. You first choose a character either an Inkling or Octoling then choose a hairstyle, eye colour and leg wear that suits your preferences.  In the game, there are three categories of gear, Headgear, Clothes and Shoes. All three have a wide selection to choose from, providing you with unlimited ideas in customising your character.

Preparation

In the game, I would play lots of online matches and earn credits so I could buy gear.  For the clothes I own, I would experiment with my character starting with one piece that I like then choosing the other two sets. I would go through the list and experiment the different clothes until I found an ideal combination.

Project

As I was experimenting on the choices of gear, I wound up creating six characters, each one with their sets of gear and appearance.

For the project, I could not decide which character to draw, so I decided to draw each of their heads with their respective headgear as a test to see how drawing characters would look like.

I wanted to try a different design for the characters so it would not resemble closely to the video game version.

I would reference the in-game model but also use a human model of my drawing figurines.

I first drew the outlines of the model to get the basic proportions of the body. I then traced over it with new outlines to create a human body shape featuring slight alterations to match the in-game model such as big head(s) and hands whilst also removing the mechanical components from the model figurine.

I wanted to do a full drawing of the character which includes a turnaround, showing different angles. I picked the main character of the group because of how he relates a bit to me from his looks and choice of gear.

When it came to drawing the character from multiple angles, I used guides to help pinpoint different areas of the body so that for each angle, they would all match up.

Because this is the first time drawing a turnaround, the front is the only angle that showcases the full design of the character whilst the other angles only show the process of the character's design.
